FAQs About Mulch, Sand, & Gravel

When it comes to landscaping, you will use a variety of landscaping supplies. Topsoil, mulch, stone, gravel, and sand are the most used materials for landscaping and gardening. Despite being basic materials, we often do not know much about them. Below are some of the most common questions that we get regarding our landscaping supplies.

Mulch is an effective way to prevent weed growth, retain moisture for your plants, and insulate your soil against both the heat and the cold. For maximum effectiveness, your layer of mulch should be 2- to 3-inches thick.

Both unscreened and screened topsoil provide their benefits and are used for specific purposes. Unscreened topsoil is topsoil that comes directly from excavations and isn’t broken down. It may contain roots, rocks, weeds, sticks, and woodchips. It is not suitable for growing plants, but it is often good for use as a base for a construction project. Screened topsoil is topsoil that has been filtered and is suitable for growing plants or laying a lawn.

A cubic yard is defined as a cube with sides of 1 yard in length.

There is a simple formula you can follow to determine how many cubic yards you need. It is as follows: cubic yards = length (in feet) x width (in feet) x height (in feet)/depth divided by 27.

The type of mulch that you use is entirely up to you. It does not matter much which type of mulch you choose. It is just personal preference.

Mulch is made from woodchips. There is no guarantee that it will keep bugs away. Some people believe that cedar mulch has properties that are more repellant to bugs than other types of mulch.
